Surplus military kits built on upper receivers of good quality are the next best route to go for a great FAL. Parts kits can still be found for $500-$700 and up depending on make and quality. Get an upper receiver from DSA for $400 and you've got a good FAL for around $1000 or so. Check out FALfiles.com for more info. Happy shooting!

I believe you can go 2 ways to make a CA legal FAL. Either keep the detachable mag and remove the pistol grip and flash suppressor (and keep it over 30") OR you can fix a 10 round mag. And the only thing that you will be registering is the receiver. You don't need to register it again after you build it.

Tin is needed to alloy the lead and antimony and improve casting qualities. What you want is approx 90% lead, 5 % tin , 5% antimony or 90-5-5 ratio. Give or take a few % in any. Just picked up an FAL with two DSA polymer mags and one Moses mag. Had to file the back of one of the DSA's and the Moses. I'm finding that the top round of both of these mags are getting dented and gouged just from racking a round into the chamber.
